SUS316L stainless steel application industry

SUS316L is a grade of stainless steel material. AISI 316L is the corresponding American designation, and SUS 316L is the corresponding Japanese designation. The unified numerical designation in China is S31603, and the standard grade is 022Cr17Ni12Mo2 (new standard), while the old grade is 00Cr17Ni14Mo2, indicating that it mainly contains Cr, Ni, and Mo, and the numbers represent the approximate percentage contents.

Due to its excellent corrosion resistance, SUS316L has a wide range of applications in the chemical industry. SUS316L is also a derivative of the 18-8 type austenitic stainless steel, with the addition of 2-3% Mo element. Based on 316L, many steel grades have also been derived. For example, 316Ti is derived by adding a small amount of Ti, 316N is derived by adding a small amount of N, and 317L is derived by increasing the contents of Ni and Mo.

Most of the existing SUS316L products on the market are produced in accordance with the American standard. Considering the cost, steel mills generally try to keep the Ni content of their products as close to the lower limit as possible.

The American standard stipulates that the Ni content of SUS316L is 10-14%, while the Japanese standard stipulates that the Ni content of SUS316L is 12-15%. According to the lowest standard, there is a 2% difference in the Ni content between the American and Japanese standards, which is still quite significant in terms of price. Therefore, when customers purchase SUS316L products, they need to check carefully whether the products are based on the ASTM or JIS standards.

The Mo content in SUS316L gives this steel grade excellent pitting corrosion resistance and allows it to be safely applied in environments containing halogen ions such as Cl－. Since SUS316L is mainly used for its chemical properties, steel mills have relatively lower requirements for the surface inspection of SUS316L (compared to 304). Customers with higher requirements for the surface should strengthen the intensity of surface inspection.

Welding filler materials

Rod-shaped, wire-shaped, and strip-shaped electrodes with good weldability, as well as electrode core materials in all specifications, can be provided.

SUS316L seamless pipes and welded pipes are in stock. The outer diameter of the billets is Φ10-520. Conventional specifications are available from stock.
